Common Art Week 6 - Lighting
This week we took a pic of an object utilizing a 3 point lighting scheme. I chose Spanish festival Barbie and used a red screen on a laptop and two lamps; one orange and one teal.
Here is the original:

Common Art Week 4 - Drew Struzan and Composition
This week we studied Drew Struzan's famous poster designs. He is a master of compositional layout and his work is extremely well-known.
I honestly struggled a lot with this piece. I should have chosen a more stylized way to present the image, rather than just making a mediocre copy of the original. I would have enjoyed the assignment more, I think.
I believe this piece displays multiple types of composition, the first being across layout. The main characters in the scene are laid out across horizontal and vertical lines, with the attention being drawn to the middle of the page.
I could also argue that the image showcases a pyramid layout as well. Because the heads vary in size, their positioning simulates two opposing triangles that, once again, draw attentions towards the middle of the composition.

Common Art Week 2 - Brian Froud and Silhouettes
Nine silhouette redesigns of a Brian Froud faerie illustration. Letter A is the original. I had an absolute BLAST doing this assignment. I kept a few designs fairly close to the original (G, H, I) and went a little crazy on some others (C, D, F).
Original image below (very low quality).

Common Art Week 1 - Syd Mead and Basic Shapes
Our first assignment was to select a piece by Syd Mead and pull out a few areas of interest and recreate them, keeping in mind basic shapes.
I chose his work entitled "The Party" and selected one of the female partygoers and the futuristic device immediately closest to the viewer. From my perspective, I see it as a sort of reimagined private seating area.
To begin my sketch, I analyzed each object and laid down simple shapes like ovals, circles, and tubes.
Here I have highlighted the main forms that make up the seating area. From here, it was easy to block out where the edges would go and consequently, the highlights and shadows.
